What Is the Difference Between Petite Syrah and Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah?

Syrah vs Petite Syrah

Syrah is one of the most iconic red grape varieties in the world. Known for its depth, full body, and distinctive spicy notes, it can express a wide range of styles depending on the terroir and winemaking approach – from elegant and fruit-driven wines to powerful, complex wines with great aging potential.

In the Bessa Valley portfolio, this variety is represented by two wines – Petite Syrah and Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah. Although they come from the same grape variety, they reflect two different philosophies of winemaking and two distinct interpretations of Syrah.

Petite Syrah – an elegant and approachable style

Petite Syrah presents the classic character of the variety in a balanced and approachable way. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected in the vineyard to preserve the freshness and purity of the fruit aromas.

The aromatic profile reveals notes of blackberry, blueberry, and ripe dark fruits, complemented by hints of violet, black pepper, and subtle chocolate nuances. The wine is full-bodied yet well balanced, with smooth tannins and pleasant freshness.

The wine ages for approximately 12 months in French oak barrels, using a combination of new and previously used barrels. This approach adds complexity and structure while preserving the fruit-forward character of the wine.

After bottling, the wine undergoes an additional period of bottle aging, allowing the aromas to harmonize and the structure to become smoother and more refined.

Petite Syrah is part of the mid-range series of the winery – a wine that combines quality, balance, and versatility. It pairs beautifully with rich meat dishes, roasted lamb, game, or aged cheeses.

Average annual production: approximately 7,000 bottles (0.75 L).

Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah – a premium expression of terroir

Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah represents the premium interpretation of the Syrah variety at the winery. This wine is produced only from the finest and most carefully selected vineyard parcels, which yield the most concentrated and expressive grapes.

Following hand harvesting and strict grape selection, the wine undergoes meticulous vinification. It is aged for 18 months in 100% new French oak barrels, giving it exceptional structure, depth, and long-term aging potential.

After bottling, Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah continues to age in the bottle, allowing its aromas to evolve further and gain additional complexity and elegance. This additional maturation helps the wine achieve perfect balance between fruit, tannins, and oak.

The aromatic profile is rich and layered, featuring ripe black fruits, spices, black pepper, and subtle smoky notes from the new oak. The tannins are powerful yet velvety, leading to a long and elegant finish.

One of the defining characteristics of this wine is its highly limited production.

Limited edition: only 3,756 bottles.

Two interpretations of a great variety

Both wines demonstrate the potential of Syrah in the terroir of Bessa Valley, yet they express it in different ways.

Petite Syrah is an excellent choice for those who wish to experience the fruit-forward and elegant side of the variety. Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah, on the other hand, is crafted for special moments – a deep, complex, and limited wine with excellent aging potential.

Together, these wines represent two levels of expression of the same noble variety – from balanced everyday elegance to a premium interpretation with true collector’s appeal.
