Svetlozar Dzhurov – 22 Years with Bessa Valley

The story of a winery can be told through its wines, its vintages and the changes that time leaves upon them. But there is another story as well – the story of the people who stay in one place long enough to know it beyond the obvious.

With Svetlozar Dzhurov, we begin The Bessi Today – a series dedicated to the people whose knowledge, character and work stand behind Bessa Valley.

Svetlozar has been part of the project for 22 years – practically since its very beginning. That means 22 vintages and the rare opportunity for a winemaker to follow the evolution of the same vineyards over time: to understand the particular character of individual plots, the way different grape varieties behave from one year to another, and those subtle differences that gradually shape the identity of a place.

There is no pursuit of showmanship in his work. Rather, there is consistency and restraint, backed by years of observation and accumulated experience. His approach to wine follows the same philosophy – to bring out the best of each particular vintage, rather than impose a predetermined formula upon it.

Because nature, fortunately, has little interest in human plans. One year may be generous; the next may challenge both the grower and the winemaker. It is precisely within this variability that experience reveals its true value.

After 22 years, Svetlozar knows Bessa Valley not simply as a collection of terroir characteristics, but as a place with a biography. He knows how the vineyards change, how the varieties respond, and what even a difficult year can give when approached with enough knowledge and patience.

Winemakers have a privilege that few professions can offer – they can return to their own work ten or fifteen years later. Sometimes, all it takes is opening a bottle.

Inside it remain the vintage, the decisions, the time and the experience of that particular moment.

Twenty-two years of Bessa Valley’s history also carry the signature of Svetlozar Dzhurov.
