In 2026, Domaine Bessa Valley celebrates its 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century during which a bold vision has grown into an established name on the Bulgarian and international wine scene.

A Wine Born in the Thracian Lowlands
Ancient land. A contemporary story.
In the heart of the Thracian Lowlands, near the village of Ognyanovo, the land preserves the legacy of the Bessi, an ancient Thracian tribe associated with the cult of Dionysus and the region’s millennia-old winemaking traditions.
It was here, in 2001, that the story of Bessa Valley began. Among the founders were Count Stephan von Neipperg, a descendant of a renowned Bordeaux wine family, and investor Dr. Karl-Heinz Hauptmann.
French winemaking expertise met the remarkable potential of Bulgarian terroir. From this encounter emerged the ambition to create wines of distinctive character, elegance and international stature.
A Quarter of a Century Dedicated to Quality
Between 2001 and 2006, the vineyards were established across 36 individual plots. Merlot, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Sauvignon found favourable growing conditions in the valley’s clay-limestone soils.
Partially embedded in a rocky hillside, the winery combines modern technology with the natural advantages of its surroundings.
Hand harvesting, double selection of the grapes and careful ageing in French oak contribute to the distinctive character of its wines: richness, precision, balance and refined elegance.
A Milestone in the Winery’s History: The First Golden Rhyton
As early as 2006, ENIRA Reserva 2004 received the prestigious Golden Rhyton Award at the Vinaria exhibition.
Two decades later, bottles from this vintage can still be found in the collections of wine enthusiasts, reflecting the remarkable potential of these wines to evolve with time.

DiVino TOP 50, 2025 – An Outstanding Achievement
Domaine Bessa Valley Syrah 2021 was recognised as the Best Bulgarian Red Wine of 2025, securing second place in the overall DiVino TOP 50 ranking.
Today, Bessa Valley wines reach discerning enthusiasts across Europe, North America and Asia. Approximately 80% of the winery’s production is exported, reflecting the trust it has earned and the enduring reputation it has built in international markets.
This global presence also contributes to Bulgaria’s recognition as a country with a rich winemaking heritage and a modern wine industry capable of producing wines of exceptional quality.
