Petit Verdot 2019: A Deep and Focused Expression of the Variety
Tasting Profile & Sensory Experience
- Primary aromas: Plum and forest fruits.
- Secondary notes: Fresh mint, cinnamon and delicate floral tones of lilac.
On the palate, Petit Verdot 2019 reveals a powerful structure and high density, yet remains rounded and composed thanks to its noble, soft tannins. The finish is long and concentrated, confirming the distinctive character and inner depth of the variety.
Terroir & Winemaking
Petit Verdot is cultivated in selected parcels where the variety can reach full phenolic maturity. The limited production reflects a focused approach, privileging quality and character over volume.
Grape Variety:
- 100% Petit Verdot
Winemaking:
The grapes are harvested by hand with strict quality control in the vineyard. After gentle destemming and careful berry selection, whole berries are transferred by gravity into concrete tanks without crushing. Cold maceration precedes fermentation, followed by controlled alcoholic fermentation and extended warm maceration to achieve depth of extraction. After malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, exclusively new oak, building structure and complexity. The final blend is filtered and bottled.
Food Pairing & Serving Suggestions
Petit Verdot 2019 pairs naturally with richly flavoured and structured dishes:
- Red meats: Grilled beef, slow-roasted lamb
- Game: Venison, wild game dishes
- Cheeses: Aged, firm cheeses
Serving temperature: 16–18°C
Cellaring potential: Suitable for extended ageing, with the structure to evolve over the next 10–15 years.
Average annual production: 2,400 bottles (0.75 L)
Petit Verdot 2019: The Enigma of Domaine Bessa Valley
In the wine world, Petit Verdot is often called the “lost grape of Bordeaux”—notoriously difficult to grow but indispensable for the structure of great blends. However, when it comes to premium Bulgarian red wine from the Thracian Valley, Bessa Valley does something daring: it presents this variety in its pure, varietal glory with the Petit Verdot 2019.
A Variety That Loves the Thracian Sun
Petit Verdot requires immense heat and a specific terroir to reveal its full potential. While in its French homeland it often struggles to ripen fully, it has found a second home in the hot summers of Bessa Valley. The 2019 vintage is proof of this—a wine of incredible concentration, inky color, and a power rarely found in other varieties.
This wine is not for everyone—it is for those seeking a bold experience, for those who appreciate full bodies and intense, almost black fruit notes combined with delicate violet nuances.
The Craftsmanship of Domaine Bessa Valley
While known for its classic Enira range, the estate uses the Petit Verdot series to showcase its technical excellence. Aging in 100% new French oak barrels is essential for this variety to tame its powerful tannins and add complexity with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, and graphite.
Why Petit Verdot 2019 is a Collector’s Choice
This is a wine with extraordinary aging potential. Due to its high levels of anthocyanins and tannins, the Petit Verdot 2019 will continue to improve and soften in the bottle for the next 15-20 years. It is a true “black pearl” in the Domaine Bessa Valley portfolio, produced in a limited series for connoisseurs seeking an alternative to classic Cabernet or Merlot.
Culinary Challenges
Due to its intensity, this premium Bulgarian wine requires rich, fatty dishes to balance its structure:
- Wild game (boar or venison) with red berry reduction.
- Slow-cooked, heavily seasoned beef short ribs.
- Mature cheeses with very intense aromas and density.
