Bessa Valley stands in the heart of ancient Thrace. Our ancestors, renowned ancient winemakers, discovered the magnificent properties of this land, choosing this perfect location for cultivating vines more than 3,500 years ago. The first land in Bessa Valley was purchased after traveling around the country and consulting with existing, respected winemakers and wine experts, a decision was made to acquire the rest of the territory from 800 landowners, establishing Bessa Valley Winery in 2001.

The greatest wines require limited, harsh, and rugged terrains. The soil in the region typically consists of a combination of limestone, clay, and gravel. Limestone, formed over millions of years from the remains of marine organisms like coral, shellfish, and microscopic algae, serves as the primary source of minerality in the grapes, adding complexity to the wines. Clay plays a crucial role in retaining moisture, ensuring that vines have access to water during dry periods, while gravel provides excellent drainage, preventing waterlogging and promoting healthy vine growth.

Our dedication for crafting exceptional wines mirrors our utmost respect for the land, people, and fruit. We strive to work sustainably, in harmony with nature, to preserve and nurture the delicate balance of the ecosystem.

Our wines’ exceptional structure and integrated taste primarily derive from the soil, making us less dependent on climate change.

The fertility of Bessa Valley soil is generally moderate, extremely beneficial for grapevines, allowing them to produce high-quality fruits. Overly fertile soil can result in excessive vine growth and lower-quality grapes.

The rhythm of life in Bessa Valley extends beyond the vineyards, where wild herbs such as thyme, oregano, and mint thrive, influencing the soil composition and providing a haven for beneficial insects. Cultivated lavender, wheat, sunflower, and roses paint a tapestry of colors across the landscape, subtly infusing our wines with the essence of their surroundings.
